Still, it's worth it to take a MG course. There's a lot of info on diseases and soils and pruning--etc. I was hoping for a little landscape design though, and was dissappointed. But you can certainly put it on a resume under 'activities'.

Sheri Cline, you ask great questions about "Master Gardeners" I know master gardeners that couldn't garden their way out of a wet paper bag, as usual a tittle aint worth the ink on it, read a few books, and the most of it you can't learn from a book. Always remember this country is run by all people with Masters Degrees'. As far as employment, collage is the answer. or start your own slowly over a 5 year span with a real job on the side and 5 years from now you will be the master "of your life"

Sheri, could you do an agriculture course on-line? It would save you the commute - 200 miles is a crazy drive - and still give you training and a degree. And, does any one have any suggestions for me to look under to look up a county extension office? Norfolk in not located in a county, it is an independent city, and I haven't been able to find anything in the phone book!

Thank you for everyone's in-put about being a MG. I did connect with the community college and they informed me that they discontinued their agriculture program for the 2010 year. I just missed it. I'd have to drive to Seattle, University of WA. to go to classes there but the 200 mile commute would kill me and I don't drive in big cities, it's crazy there! There are several interest I would like to go into but it looks like I'm going to have to wait until I get my gardening room built, buy the books and lab necessities & teach myself, there are a few people here that are willing to help me(Bless them!). I've been doing "volunteer" work here on the island since 1999, native plant rescue from building sites, rescuing landscaping plants during yard make-overs and replanting in city owned easements and my yard, by myself. I've tried to get the local gardeners and MG's interested in doing this but they take no interest at all.
Again, Thanks for the in-put. Cheers!

I took the Arkansas Polk County Master Gardener's class in April 2009. I also hold A.A.S. Degrees in Landscape Design and Nursery Management. It's been awhile since I have applied my horticulture and design knowledge, that is until I moved back to Arkansas. The hours I put in with the MG's in Polk County have helped refresh my abilities as they have me drawing up designs for projects we work on for the community. I also edit our POLK COUNTY MOUNTAIN DIRT NEWSLETTER. I upload each month's newsletter on my website: naturescape.biz. Please feel free to download our January 2010.pdf newsletter.

For me the MG program was more than just the knowledge I picked up. I already had two degrees in Ag. but hadn't worked in the field for 30+ years so I needed lots of reminders. I'm retired and Master Gardening allows me to give back to the community and have fun at the same time. We are a relatively small group, about 40 members, but we grow by a net of 6-7 members each year. My cost 4 years ago was $150 and worth every cent in knowledge and fun and service. It's not designed to prepare one for a job, however. So if that's your goal, than I concur that community college is the way to go. All the best Sheri. I love your area of the country.

For employment purposes, I'd pick the community college. My program was one or two nights a week, and no more than a semester (Vermont). They're usually run by an extension service of a university. My training was about 40 bucks, 1o-15 yrs. ago, w/ another 40 as a deposit against the volunteer hours. What you get trained for is mostly to answer a hotline with peoples questions about bugs & diseases, etc.. Or working in the community as a volunteer in a gardening related role. In fact, I recall them telling us we weren't allowed to hang up a 'Master Gardener' shingle at all, a stipulation that our advice was free. Now, if you went for a horticulture degree, you could charge but the designation 'MASTER GARDENER' always means that you devote x amount of hours per year as a volunteer helping people garden. I can't really call myself a master gardener though I've completed the training as I haven't volunteered for awile.
