Hi. Im a very novice rose gardener, and because of that I planted a few of my roses too close together- when is a good time to transplant ? Im in zone 7 and have been pruning them the first week in February, can I move them at that time?

Thank you Terri. I have never tried the coffee grounds/banana peel trick. I fertilize with "rose fertilizer in the Spring at the first sign of new growth. Every 5-6 weeks thereafter to late September right before dormancy.

Dotty, your yellow rose is beautiful - do you use the coffee grounds and banana peel trick? When do you fertilize?

Hi folks! New here cause I just found you! My love is old garden roses. I do have some Hy teas, etc, but here in SW Louisiana they have to be babied to keep the diseases in check. The OG kind thrive on neglect and bloom all year w/o anything other than talking sweet to them. My mutabilis is 16' tall and that big across. I'll cut it way back this Jan. I have Old Blush, Pearl d'Ore, Mrs Dudley Cross, Louie Phillepe, Mrs. B R Cant, Belinda's Dream..and more. I'll post some photos later. I'm glad I found this site. My zone is 8b-9a..right on the edge.

The most common cause for a dead rose is the warm temperatures in the winter which gets them growing, followed by a hard freeze (canes will go from green /brown to black/burnt)...covering the bufd union is essential before this warm/cold period occur. Do NOT prune roses in the fall...if you are concenred about the wind rocking the plant, you can cut the roses back about 1/2 way AFTER two hard freezes below 28F.
