Thanks for the instructions, Terry. I had amazing success with my cucumbers and tomatoes using self-watering pots - it was nice not to have to water 4-5 times a day. Love 'em!

Caroline they are a home made version of the Earth Box, which is very expensive. I bought one of those to see if they would work and it worked fine. however as I say they are expensive and I wanted a bigger box for bigger plants. So I bought some large plastic storage containers and constructed my own. You can find instructions for building them on instructables.com. Do a search for self watering containers. There are several different sets of instructions on there. I built three last spring and they all worked great. You can make them out of any thing that will hold water. This spring I intend to make some useing old 1/2 whisky barrells. If you try making these and the instuctions confuse you please let me know and i will try to help. One thing to remember that is very important is to use container mix not potting soil in your containers.

Good luck. if the instructions are not clear let me know and i will post pics. when I make my next containers.

They are delicious. The plant pictured is a cross of 2 heirloom tomatoes (Polish Giant and Daniels) that I have been growing for several years. Produced fruit from 2nd. week of July until frost. Mostly 1lb+ fruit. Here is a pict

ure of some that I picked in Sept. They are not quite as large as the ones That I got in July and August. But still nice.

Those are some HUGE plants! You can tell they were happy with your containers!!! How were the tomatoes? I've found homegrown so much more flavorful than store bought.

This is my 8ft. Heirloom Beefsteak Tomato growing in my home made self watering container. I made three of these and they all produced large beautiful fruit right up to frost. They out produced the same plants planted in the ground by at least 50% without any blight.

Has anyone here tried the self-watering pots you can buy at Wal-Mart? I used them this year with cucumbers and cherry tomatoes with GREAT results! It's so nice to know that by filling the bottom in the morning, the plants get all the water they want without worrying about the pot drying out too fast.
