Where to begin: A beginner's plight

My goal is my favorite vegetables, herb and colorful flowers. My reality: sand instead of soil, big trees, birds and squirrels, opossums. Where to begin? Boston ferns grow great, and so do ''impatients'' and succulents things I don't know the name of, poor man's iris and a wonderful Eucyliptus (spelling?) tree out front. And sand. I said sand, didn't I? Where to begin, where to begin...

Rooting hormone!

So I haven't had a lot of time for my little garden as of late! However in passing my school breaks away I would wonder through the gardens at my collage. HACC has some wonderful gardens that are put together by their gardening classes as well as a full time staff that works there. In passing I noticed one of these workers pulling out all the annuals for the end of year. It was sad to see such pretty flowers (still blooming) being pulled from the ground. I got to talking with this worker about i… Continue

How do kindly, gently, lovingly, mass murder ants.

Anyone? I've dealt with them so far, but when they stick their evil little aphids on a girl's artichoke plants...that's just crossing the line! Shelley Dayton

Migrating Monarchs...a race against time

I was delighted and surprised to find 3 Monarch butterflies fluttering around my garden today. It seemed rather late for them to be this far north (Knoxville, TN) in November. So I went searching the internet to check it out. I discovered that the Monarchs cannot fly when the temperature is below 50 degrees on a s… Continue

mexican petunia

Thank you for answering my question. I do see that this plant has flourished and will be taking one out and transplanting in another area. I'm hoping to do this this weekend and hoping it is the right time. In Zone 7, Georgia and I read that I can do this now. Should I also trim? How much? Planting in Georgia is quite different than the state of New York. Thank you

The Confederate Rose Part II

It is fall and my Confederate Roses are in full bloom. As I blogged earlier, the Confederate Rose, Hibiscus mutabilis is a multi-stemmed shrub that grows to a height of about 15' and a width of about 10'. This shrub was an import from China and has no relation to the American… Continue

Wow! We don't have fire ants, just a billion billion teeny black ants. But if Amdro works on yours, it'll probably work on these guys! Thanks very much.

There are many safe products you can use to elimate these distructive pests. I do not know where you live but down here we are always fighting fire ants and Amdro works on them. Go to your garden center and ask them for a product that is safe and ...

Hey Denise, catching up on the posts today. My favorite classes seem to change over the years. I have a lot of really prickly cacti, but lately I've been concentrating on caudiciforms. I have several Bombax Elipticums, Adeniums, and a few others. ...

Hi Denise. Love you H. trucata 'Lime Green'. I too have many haworthias and Gasterias. But my largest collection is Sansevierias. Sans are mostly easy to grow unless they're variegated. Trouble with them is that many grow large.
